In figuring your estimate, determine

  1. The number of measures in the piece
  2. The number of measures per system (see below)
  3. The number of systems per page (see below)
  4. The number of pages required
  5. Finally, multiply the number of pages by the amount shown in the chart above.

See the information below for assistance in your calculations.

Choral octavo. Generally speaking, you can get three staff systems per page in closed score--two systems in open score--with three measures per system in 4/4 or 6/8 meter. Meter in 2/4 or 3/4 will sometimes permit four measures per system; 9/8 or 12/8 will usually allow only two systems per system. Another factor to consider is how "busy" the music is. Music teeming with sixteenth notes will reduce the number of measures per system while music containing mostly quarter and half notes may permit more per system. Readability and clarity will take priority over using as few pages as possible.

Piano or other keyboard. In 4/4 or 6/8 meter, portrait view, you can usually count on about 4 measures per staff system and about four to five staff systems per page. Other meters will increase or decrease this, and you should consider the amount of short note values as opposed to long note values. (See explanation under Choral octavo.)

Symphony, band, chamber orchestra or opera. Plan on five measures per system for orchestral or band pieces--four for opera (to allow extra space for lyrics). Remember that measures per system may vary depending on meter and predominant note values. (See explanation under Choral octavo.) The size of the ensemble will permit only one staff system per page.

Small chamber ensembles. The number of measures per system will vary depending on meter and predominant note values, but you can usually assume four to five measures per system. The number of systems per page will depend on the size of the ensemble: four parts will allow up to three systems per page while larger parts may limit it to two systems per page.

Part pages. Assume three to five measures per staff system and up to seven systems per page.

Lead sheets. Assume three measures per system and and about seven to eight systems per page.

Rhythm charts. Assume four measures per system and three to four systems per page.
